When 12 Ritsuka Aoyagi discovers a message from his older brother Seimei, indicating he was murdered, Ritsuka is left alone with his insane mother. In a strange twist of fate, Ritsuka meets a mysterious 20 year old man named Soubi claiming to be an old friend of Seimeis. After meeting Soubi, Ritsuka becomes involved in a shadowy world of spell battles and secret names. Couples of people, called units, assigned to be either a Sacrifice who recieves all the damage of the battle, or a Fighter, who engages in battles where words are the weapons. Ritsuka tries to find his place in this new and confusing world, with Soubi claiming to be his fighter unit, left to him by Seimei. Together they search to find Seimei's killer, and with that search more questions than answers seem to arise.
